November Newsletter: A Message from Dr. Roman

Dear Patients,

Last April, you may have received an email from the state saying that I am no longer able to see patients. There is truth to this. As some of you know, I was also a medical marijuana patient myself. One year ago, I filed a lawsuit against the US government for blocking my rights to purchase a gun because I was a marijuana patient. Despite being a patient since 2017 (I used to be a Delaware resident where it was already legal and then I moved to Pennsylvania), it was only after this lawsuit that the government decided to do something about my medical marijuana use. Rather than accepting that I was a medical patient with a qualified condition, they instead claimed that I had a “Cannabis Use Disorder” and put my license on probation. I am able to practice medicine but I am unable to certify new patients for medical marijuana cards or see my old patients for their renewals. The gun case was closed down because I am not allowed to be a medical marijuana patient anymore.

Nature’s Way Medicine Has New Doctors

Even though the Delaware office is closed, the good news is that our Pennsylvania patients don’t have to find another clinic to get their medical marijuana cards. While all of this went down, I managed to find new doctors that can certify PA patients for medical marijuana cards. We have four doctors working part-time. These doctors are stricter with requiring paperwork that shows patients have a qualified condition. If patients had paperwork at their initial appointment, they do not need to bring new paperwork to their renewals. If they did not bring any documents with them to their first appointment, they will need something from another healthcare provider’s office that shows they have chronic pain, anxiety, PTSD, etc. If you do not have healthcare records, we can recommend to you another provider who can give you a letter stating you have a qualified diagnosis for medical marijuana that you can bring with you to your appointment.

Starting a Rehab Center

The state made me go to rehab for my medical marijuana use last May. While I was in there for six weeks, I realized that the rehab industry was not helping addicts as much as they could.  We have a growing opiate crisis in the country and Philadelphia especially has a lot of residents addicted to opiates. I still do not feel I had any addiction to medical marijuana but since I gained the experience of going through rehab and seeing how addictions are treated, I decided to try to help people by starting my own rehab center for opiate addicts. It will be called Nature’s Way Rehab and we will be applying for a license with the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. Once we get this approved, we will seek an exception to use medical marijuana as a treatment in the facility for patients addicted to pain medicine and other types of opiates. Medical marijuana has been approved in the state for this condition and we believe a hands-on approach would be the safest way to detox patients without switching them to other addicting drugs like suboxone and methadone.

Primary Care and Psychotherapy

While I await opening the rehab center, I will be available for primary care appointments. I am charging $50 out-of-pocket for 30 minute appointments, which I believe is reasonable for primary care. Patients who need a therapist or routine family medical doctor can see me now for that. The motto of Nature’s Way Medicine is Integrating Primary Care and Medical Marijuana, so it’s time for me to return to those roots. I’ll be making sure patients are screened for diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes, and ensuring they are screened appropriately for cancer so it is caught early. If you don’t have a family doctor and you enjoyed your time with me, then book an appointment on our website and choose the Primary Care option.
